KrisFlyer Devaluation Incoming? SQ’s "Celebration" Might Be a Smokescreen

KrisFlyer Devaluation Incoming? SQ’s "Celebration" Might Be a Smokescreen
Source: Trust me Bro

It’s been nearly three years since the last KrisFlyer award chart hike in 2022 (post-COVID). Historically, Singapore Airlines (SQ) has only revised its award chart six times since 1999, averaging one devaluation every four years. Given how elusive Business Saver awards have become—and the rapid rise of "travel hacking"—it’s almost a foregone conclusion that SQ will jack up award ticket prices again soon.

For reference, the last devaluation in 2022 saw prices jump by 8-16%. If history is any guide, another hike is just around the corner.

Insider Whispers: The Great KrisFlyer "Mile Burning" Plan

My internal source at the SQ Group has revealed that teams have been instructed to roll out a series of campaigns under the guise of "giving members a chance to redeem their miles."

This makes sense to me —SQ knows that when the devaluation news drops, members will scramble to burn their miles. KrisShop and similar outlets are perfectly positioned as a dumping ground for miles, offering terrible value compared to flight redemptions.

Then there’s the KrisFlyer 10 Million Members Bash.

This event is being marketed as a "celebration," but let’s be real—KrisFlyer doesn’t need more popularity. If anything, this feels like a preemptive move to soften the blow before announcing yet another devaluation.

So, what’s being dangled in front of us?

  • 20% Off Economy & Premium Economy Awards

Economy redemptions are usually bad value, but this 20% cut might be enough to lure members into locking in flights before a possible devaluation. Unlike Spontaneous Escapes (which offers 30% off but with a tight booking window), this promo applies to flights up to mid-November 2025. Catch: These are promo awards—strictly non-changeable, non-refundable.

  • 30% Off KrisShop & Pelago Redemptions

Let’s be honest—spending miles on KrisShop is never a good deal. Even with a 30% discount, you’re still getting far less value compared to award flights. But if SQ knows a devaluation is coming, they are going to see an opportunity for you to burn miles on KrisShop.

  • 30% Transfer Bonus to Kris+

Another meh offer. Unless your miles are expiring, transferring them to Kris+ is still a terrible deal. Again, this just looks like a push to drain miles before a potential award chart revision.

  • 50% Bonus Miles on SIA & Scoot Flights

  • 20% Bonus on Partner Conversions

What’s Really Going On? 🚨

This so-called "celebration" seems an eerily prelude to a devaluation.

❓ A flurry of redemption promos ❓ Massive KrisShop push ❓ "Limited-time offers" to use your miles

SQ knows exactly what they’re doing. By the time the devaluation officially drops, many KrisFlyer members will have already burned their miles on suboptimal redemptions—leaving fewer people outraged when award prices inevitably rise again.

So, what’s the play here?

✅ If you’re sitting on a stockpile of KrisFlyer miles, consider redeeming for premium cabins NOW before we see another hike. ✅ Ignore KrisShop and Kris+ unless your miles are expiring—you're getting poor value.

✅ Keep an eye out for Spontaneous Escapes next week—maybe SQ will throw us a bone with better discounts.

For now, watch this space. Something big is coming. 🚨
